The closed profile protects the daily shape
We build the closed bag to stay flat against your spine. In our workshop, 32 of our 80 catalogue items rely on an expansion gusset, splitting across 21 backpacks and 11 sleeve cases. When the perimeter zip stays shut, the load stays pinned close to your center of gravity. That stops a laptop from tilting outward and dragging on the shoulder straps.
A daily commute rarely needs more than a machine, a charger, and a notebook. We print screen sizes from 12.9 inches up to 17 inches across these patterns, including common cuts for 14, 15.6, and 16 inches. Keeping the depth tight keeps the fabric taut over the internal padding. It also slides under a train seat without catching on hardware.
Unzipping the gusset changes your load floor
Pulling the perimeter slider releases a folded band of coated fabric. This band adds several inches of depth along the base and sides. You gain space for a light jacket, a packed lunch, or an overnight wash kit that would crush a flat sleeve. But the bag now behaves differently.
The floor drops and widens. Heavy items placed inside an expanded shell will settle toward the bottom corner furthest from your back. Pack dense gear first against the rear padded wall, then fill the expanded front zone with compressible clothes to hold everything tight.
Packing an expanded shell without the sag
An expanded bag packed half empty looks loose and pulls away from the shoulders. The fabric loses tension because the gusset was engineered to fill out under bulk.
- Keep the laptop in its dedicated sleeve against the back panel.
- Pack chargers and cables in pouches at the bottom corners.
- Roll soft garments to fill the outward gusset space completely.
- Zip the gusset shut again if your load drops during the day.
When to leave the perimeter zip closed
Keep the zip closed whenever your gear fits without bulging the front pocket. A slim profile slips cleanly through crowded transport, sits securely over a rolling suitcase handle via the rear luggage pass-through, and preserves the water-resistant face of the coated shell. Four of these expanding patterns also carry an external USB pass-through port, which works best when the sidewalls remain structured.
If you force extra bulk into the bag while it remains closed, the main teeth take stress they were not meant to hold. Open the expansion instead. Let the gusset take the volume, pack the extra layer, and zip it flat again when you return to your basic work carry.
